Apple Isn’t #1? DJI Made the List! TIME’s Top 10 Gadgets of 2017 Is Kinda Interesting

Before you know it, the year is winding down — and the annual “chart-topping derby” is in full swing. Memory prices aside, the digital hardware world has still produced its share of standout products this year.

The most polarizing of them all? Undoubtedly the notch-sporting iPhone X. But the sales figures speak for themselves — and they’ve forced everyone to take a serious look at this supposedly “future-facing” phone.

And TIME magazine hasn’t been sitting idle either. They’ve named their Top 10 Gadgets of 2017. The twist? #1 isn’t Apple…

Somewhere, an iPhone is weeping.

Here’s the full list:

#10: Sony A7R III

Sony has been on an absolute tear in the camera industry these past few years. First came the A9 — a flagship mirrorless camera going head-to-head with Nikon and Canon’s top-end DSLRs. Then came the A7R III, a camera that defies categorization, blending blazing speed with exceptional image quality. All of which have emboldened Sony to declare itself the world’s second-largest camera maker, behind only Canon.

The Sony A7R III competes directly with high-end DSLRs just below flagship tier. The Nikon D850 and Canon EOS 5D Mark IV have been restless ever since. The #10 spot is beyond dispute.

#9: Apple Watch Series 3

Anyone familiar with the Apple Watch knows the story: the first-gen battery was a joke, the second gen saw some battery improvement, and the third gen can finally make phone calls and send text messages.

This is what a smartwatch is supposed to be. Feels like Apple has been drip-feeding us a bit, though.

#8: Microsoft Xbox One X

4K, 60 FPS! Paired with a 6-teraflop GPU to boot. Gamers who chase the absolute pinnacle of visual fidelity know exactly what that means. With an 8-core AMD 2.3GHz processor anchoring the performance, wallets didn’t stand a chance.

#7: Amazon Echo (2nd Generation)

The 2014 first-gen Echo proved one thing: without a smart speaker, voice assistants can never truly go mainstream. So three years later, Amazon launched the second-gen Echo — sleeker design, improved speakers, and priced under $100.

Looks like Google and Microsoft still have some catching up to do.

#6: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES Classic)

This year’s newly released SNES Classic comes preloaded with 21 retro games, letting countless players rediscover the Super Mario and Legend of Zelda of their youth.

How are the sales? According to NPD, the SNES Classic was the second-best-selling console in October.

Nostalgia and throwback appeal — what a beautiful pair of words!

#5: Samsung Galaxy S8

A stunning edge-to-edge OLED curved display without boundaries, earning unanimous praise from media worldwide. Bixby’s ambitions even dare to challenge Siri. The one real flaw? That awkward rear fingerprint sensor next to the camera.

#4: DJI Spark

The palm-sized Spark drone — with facial recognition and gesture-based flight control. Once again, DJI has redefined what “drone playability” means. As the undisputed leader in consumer aerial photography, Chinese brand DJI genuinely gives us something to be proud of.

#3: Microsoft Surface Laptop

Remember last year, when Microsoft and Apple clashed in the all-in-one desktop arena? The Surface Studio — with its mind-bendingly cool Surface Dial — won designers over in a landslide. This time, Microsoft has another win to celebrate: the Surface Laptop once again knocks the latest MacBook Pro off the list. Of course, Apple fans will mock the niche Surface, along with all the “1% lifestyle” memes.

#2: Apple iPhone X

The number of Apple fans and the “otaku” gaming crowd aren’t even on the same scale. TIME actually had the guts to relegate Apple to second place? Bold move.

Jokes aside, we have every reason to believe that, given Apple’s formidable R&D muscle, integrating Face ID technology directly into the display for a true full-screen experience is already on the roadmap.

#1: Nintendo Switch

This is a victory for Nintendo’s die-hard fans. Most have been counting down the days since last October. The Switch is a gaming machine that doubles as both a home console and a portable device — console, dock, and controllers, all in one package.

Truth is, people are still willing to pay for Nintendo’s brand of fun. Unfortunately, the Switch isn’t officially sold in mainland China. If you want to get your hands on one, find a reliable cross-border retailer.

Looks like the TIME editors went all out to stir up some fanboy warfare…
